A Dream is all to Blame

I'm leaving Longview and I'm heading out west

It's getting harder to say goodbye

another day on the road, another night all alone

sometimes I wonder why

She sits by the phone, waiting for my call

just to hear that I'm okay

I tell her I'm fine, but my words can't explain

what my heart longs to say

Stop this world from turning

let me off this train

alone at home her hearts burning

and a dream is all to blame

I find the only gas station in this no name town

ask directions to the fair

I pull up to the arena and pay my fees

and find my pockets now are bare

I'm a couple hundred short of making the finals

I know today is going to be my day

but it's a wasted good draw, another 7 second ride

and 7 seconds never does pay

Stop this world from turning

let me off this train

my head and my back now are hurting

and a dream is all to blame

Lovers are dancing to the band at the fair

They play "Lonely Feeling" by Robert Earl Keen

I head back to my car, and curl up on my cot

and dream them motel cowboy dreams

Stop this world from turning

let me off this train

after all these years I'm still learning

that a dream is all to blame
